Some Mothers, Other mothers
The evening brings together a set of performance pieces that explore motherhood across a range of queer contexts. Moving between contemporary, historical, and fictional narratives, the works look at different ways of forming care, family, and belonging—biological, chosen, and institutional. A young man reflects on being raised by his two mothers; a mother prepares to receive her daughter’s girlfriend for a meal; a trans initiation repositions motherhood through ritual and community. Some works draw on personal recollection and artistic history, reflecting on relationships between mothers and children across time, distance, and creative practice, including figures such as Dominic D’Souza, Firdaus Kanga and Sultan ‘Bobby’ Padamsee, seen through the perspectives of family and memory. Others engage with broader public realities, including migration, illness, and the social and legal conditions shaping queer lives in India. Together, these pieces place motherhood within both everyday experience and wider histories. Most of these works have previously been performed as part of the promenade productions Postcards from Goa and Postcards from Colaba. In this indoor format, they are presented as a curated sequence, allowing audiences to encounter them within a shared theatrical space.

Director’s Bio
Vikram Phukan is a Mumbai-based theatre practitioner, writer, dramaturg, and curator. Through Theatre Jil Jil Ramāmani, he has created works including Those Left Behind Things, Dry Ice, Postcards from Colaba, and Postcards from Goa. He teaches at Drama School Mumbai, designed and led the interdisciplinary Indo-UK course City as Stage, and is currently the curator of the theatre programme at BLR Hubba. His writing has appeared in publications including The Hindu, Mint Lounge, Forbes India, ArthArt, and International Gallerie. He has collaborated with organisations including the British Council, Goethe-Institut, Serendipity Arts Foundation, and The Queer Muslim Project.
